Commission appointing John Higginson a Lieutenant of the First Company in Salem under the command of Captain Ichabod Plaisted in the first regiment of militia within the County of Essex, 26 May 1744. Signed by secretary Josiah Willard and governor William Shirley. Commission as Captain Lieutenant of the first foot company in Salem, 26 April 1746. Signed by secretary Josiah Willard and governor William Shirley. Commission as first Lieutenant Colonel of the first regiment of militia in the County of Essex commanded by Benjamin Pickman Esq., the colonel thereof, 7 October 1765. Signed by Secretary A. Oliver and governor Francis Bernard. Verso has note dated Salem October 21st 1765 by Benjamin Lynde and Nathaniel Ropes that Higginson took the required oaths.
